After years of hearing that Cologne was home to the best Christmas markets in Europe, I decided I needed to experience it first-hand and finally check it off my bucket list. I already had plans to be in Frankfurt for the Christmas markets this year, so adding Cologne to the trip was seamless. And now that I’ve been, I can’t believe it took me so long to visit. The markets are incredible, and completely live up to the hype. Below is my travel guide to Cologne including a rundown of all the markets, the best places to eat, hotel recommendations, Christmas market tips and more.

Heinzels Winter Fairytale is my favorite Christmas market in Europe.
LATE NOVEMBER TO LATE DECEMBER. Cologne is a year-round destination, but for the purpose of the Christmas markets, you’ll want to time your visit between the end of November and end of December to coincide with the holiday festivities. If you can visit in November when the markets first open, you’ll avoid some of the crowds that steadily grow as Christmas approaches. Detailed market schedules listed below.

The green, red and white ferris wheel at Heinzels Winter Fairytale is utterly charming.
TWO DAYS. Length of stay really depends on how much time you want to spend at the Christmas markets, and if Cologne is home base for other day trips. It’s possible to experience all of Cologne’s Christmas markets in two full days, but if you want a more relaxed pace, as well as time for other sightseeing, I suggest three days in Cologne.

A long ice rink lines Heinzels Winter Fairytale.

I love all the Old World costumes that the performers wear in Heinzels Winter Fairytale.
COLOGNE CATHEDRAL CHRISTMAS MARKET
The grand Weihnachtsmarkt am Kolner Dom (Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market) is the main market in town. It sits in front of the Cologne Cathedral, a truly epic backdrop
COLOGNE HARBOR CHRISTMAS MARKET
This maritime-themed Christmas market is on the smaller side, located along the Rhine in Cologne. There are more than 70 white stalls that sell festive handmade goods, mulled wine, grilled salmon and more. The mulled wine is served from the hull of a large wooden ship.
HEINZELS WINTER FAIRYTALE
This might be my favorite Christmas market in all of Europe. Heinzels Wintermaerchen (Heinzels Winter Fairytale) is charming, detailed and elaborate, resembling a medieval village from a children’s storybook. Look for little gnomes that are sprinkled throughout the decor. The market spans two large squares (the Alert Markt and Heumarkt), and literally has it all – handmade crafts, antiques, local cuisine, sweet treats, built-out bars, a variety of mulled wine served in 12 different gnome themed mugs, ice skating, curling, a carousels and carolers and performers.
MARKET OF ANGELS
The ethereal Markt der Engel (Market of the Angels) is a beautiful market located in Neumarkt Square. The market’s long lanes are lined with white wooden huts illuminated at night by thousands of twinkling lights and glowing paper stars. This market is home to high-end handmade goods, Cologne cathedral waffles, flame-grilled salmon, cocktails, pasta, churros, crepes and more.
STADTGARTEN CHRISTMAS MARKET
This Christmas market is one of the more local markets in Cologne. It’s held under the trees in Cologne’s oldest park and gives the vibe of an enchanted forest. There are more than 60 stall vendors that change weekly selling crafts, jewelry, fashion and handmade goods. There is also mulled wine, raclette and live entertainment.
ST. NICHOLAS VILLAGE
This St. Nicholas themed Christmas market leaves visitors smitten, set against the epic medieval Hahnentorburg Gate. Nikolausdorf (St. Nicholas Village) resembles a rustic village where timbered huts sell bratwurst, pretzels, potato pancakes, hot chocolate, eggnog and mulled wine. Additionally, children can meet St. Nicholas at his home that is located inside the market.

The carousels bring a kindred spirit to the Christmas markets.

Endless ornament shopping at the Christmas markets.

All the booths are made from wood and give alpine chalet vibes.
Excelsior Hotel Ernst occupies a fabulous location, directly across from the iconic Cologne Cathedral. The property opened in 1863, and it’s the city’s only upscale hotel option. There are 133 rooms and suites that boast floor to ceiling drapes, marble bathrooms, wall moulding, silk fabrics, antiques and some with views of the cathedral spears.
While the hotel feels very branded and lacks any real character, the Hyatt Regency Koln is still a fine choice if you’re looking for somewhere clean and contemporary to stay. It sits on the banks of the Rhine River with gnarly views of the Cologne Cathedral and Old Town. There are more than 300 rooms and suites that are modern, spacious and look like a typical chain hotel.
This is a fine moderate hotel option if you need something clean, modern and spacious. The NH Collection Koln Mediapark rooms are quite big, and complete with pillow menus, floor-to-ceiling windows, marble bathrooms, rain showers and Nespresso machines.

The entrance gates to Heinzels Winter Fairytale are so grand and details.
