From storied villages to dreamy calas, the photo opportunities on Mallorca are endless.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: The water color is vibrant by mid-morning before the cala below becomes overcrowded with beachgoers. Sun direction is also ideal this time of the day.
Calo des Moro is a stunning inlet along the island’s southeast coastline. Admire the breathtaking view from atop, and then it’s a short hike down to reach the water. The beach itself is surprisingly small, and depending on the tide, there might be little to no sand. The prettiest photo location at Calo des Moro is from the little trail above the beach, along the driftwood handrails.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Early morning, early evening and under cloud cover are the best times to shoot this alley with even light. To avoid other photographers, visit early in the morning.
Valldemossa might be the most picturesque village on Mallorca. Built up a hilltop, the Old Town is a cobbled maze of charming boutiques, cafes, shops and restaurants set in stone buildings that date back to the 13th century. The village is home to the island’s iconic flower pot street Calle Rectoria, a cobbled lane lined with dozens of potted green plants and flowers scattered amongst the signature green shutters.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: If you want to shoot on the rocky pier below, arrive at the beach early to throw down your towel and secure this specific spot.
Cala Deia is a beautiful cove located on the west coast of the island, just below the village of Deia. The crystal clear water sparkles deep shades of turquoise offering up an ideal setting for sunbathing, swimming and cliff jumping. The cala is ridiculously picturesque, and the best photo location is a cement slab that extends into the water at the base of the Ca’s Patro March staircase. If you want a photo at this exact spot, it’s best to arrive very early to secure the location. Once a sunbather sets up here, the area is pretty much taken for the rest of the day.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: The setting is prettiest in the early evening when the light has a soft orange glow.
The most famous luxury hotel on the island, the Belmond La Residencia occupies an entire hillside that faces the picturesque village of Deia. There are two amazing restaurants on property, each boasting a dreamy staircase with a view. The staircase pictured above is located at Restaurante Miro, and there’s another iconic set of steps at El Olivo. Reservations recommended if you plan to visit either.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Photos are prettiest mid-morning when the water is a vibrant shade of blue (it can get murky in the afternoon if the beach is crowded). Also, if you shoot early, you’ll avoid crowding at the boathouses and around the swim ladders.
There’s a reason everyone loves Cala Llombards. It’s ridiculously beautiful. The water color is a particular shade of blue, the prettiest on the island. And the sandy beach, sunbathing rocks, boathouses and swim ladders give the cala a lot of character. There are amazing photo locations along both sides of the cala – check out the boathouses that line the north side, as well as the swim ladders on the south side.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: The restaurant is lovely most of the day, but it’s easiest to shoot midday at opening before it gets too bustling and busy.
The best restaurant view on the island is from Ca’s Patro March, perched above the stunning blue waters of Cala Deia. The prettiest photo location is from one of the tables that line the driftwood handrails overlooking the water. Reservations are a must – this place books out months in advance.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Crowds aren’t an issue for this particular location, but you’ll want to visit under cloud cover, in the early morning or in early evening for even light.
Yes, there are loads of cute flower pot walls in Valldemossa, but there’s a specific wall along Carrer de la Rosa that is particularly lovely. The green shutters, blooming flowers and cluster of 25 different pots makes for the prettiest photo backdrop. It’s located on Carrer de la Rosa, next to the restaurant Aromas.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: There isn’t much crowding along the water, but this viewpoint is the least busy in the morning. And for this particular vantage point, the light is best in the morning.
This stunning 14th century Gothic Roman cathedral sits in the heart of Palma, towering over Old Town and the Bay of Palma. The best photo location to capture the entire church is from across the lagoon, along the stone barrier.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: To avoid harsh shadows, you’ll want to shoot the viewpoint in the early morning or early evening when the light is soft and even.
There are lots of photo opportunities of cobbled lanes, cute doorways and lovely cafes within Valldemossa, but just as lovely are the village panoramas. The best vantage point is from the MA-1110, the main road you’ll take to reach Valldemossa.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: A late morning or midday visit is ideal for the prettiest water color, and to avoid the late afternoon shadow that casts over the rock viewpoint (like in my photo below).
Es Pontas is a stunning natural arch that sits just off the island’s southeast coast. The photo viewpoint is accessible via a short walk from the parking area, and from there a trail leads down to the water. At the viewpoint, there are a few different vantages of the arch. To get to the angle I shot, it’s a short walk through the foliage to the left of the main viewing area.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: An early morning visit is a must for even light, and to avoid local drivers and pedestrians popping into your photos (this is a busy street).
Continue just a little further down Carrer de la Rosa in Valldemossa to another charming cobbled corridor. The street is lined with stone houses, green shutters and Old World lanterns with a charming bell tower in the distance. It looks like the scene from a storybook. Use 12 Carrer de la Rosa as a marker in Google Maps to get here.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Arrive early to get a parking spot and scope out the beach. For photos, wait until mid-morning to shoot when the sun is high enough to give the water its vibrant shade of blue.
Sa Calobra is an absolutely stunning beach that sits trapped between two limestone cliffs. The cove is wide and deep, so the water doesn’t get murky when crowded. Lots of photo opportunities here in the sparkling water at the shoreline, as well as from the rocks, cliffs and stone steps.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Crowds aren’t much of an issue here, the viewpoint is quite an expansive area. For the best light, visit in the morning.
An epic panorama perched over the curvy MA-2141 road that leads down to Sa Calobra. There are different areas to scramble for photos along the rocks, just find a location that best showcases the curvy road as a backdrop.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: The west end of the beach looks best in the morning, and the east end near to boathouses is better midday and into the afternoon (it’s an opposite sun direction for each end of the beach). To avoid crowds, it’s best to arrive in the morning.
This beach is a must-visit while on Mallorca. A craggy crack in the coastline has formed two small coves where beachgoers flock for sunbathing, cliff jumping, swimming and boathouse vibes. The turquoise shades of water are stunning when the sun is up and the water is calm. Both sides of the cala are completely photogenic, a must-visit for photos on Mallorca.
